On October 21, the City of Winter Garden announced that Hallmark Channel had named it an Official Hallmark Christmas Town. Only 25 towns nationwide received the designation. Carlinville, Illinois won the overall Merriest contest. Winter Garden is listed among the finalists in Hallmark's Official Guide to Hallmark's Merriest Christmas Towns 2026. The city can display the seal for two years. This season it adds a Hallmark photo station at Centennial Plaza, complete with a replica of the seal to pose beside.
The city's holiday calendar has a clear shape. Most of the big events fall in about 26 hours on December 4 and 5. Then smaller programs repeat across weeknights and later weekends until early January. If you live a few minutes from Plant Street, that shape is worth planning around.
Light Up Winter Garden is on Friday, December 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. The city describes the evening this way:
"This beloved, annual tree-lighting ceremony kicks off the City's 31 days of 'Tis the Season events and the transformation of downtown into a Holiday Wonderland of lights and decorations. Festivities include A Very Merry Light Show, live holiday entertainment, children's snow play area and sled hill, vendors, and more!"
The tree is the 34-foot one at the center of downtown. The city calendar doesn't list a separate time for the lighting itself, so plan to arrive early in the 6 p.m. window.
Saturday, December 5, is the busiest day of the whole season. The city calendar stacks five events on it:
That's the farmers market crowd, the parade crowd and the evening crowd all downtown on the same day. Last year's version of this weekend shows how the city handles it. For the 2025 events, West Plant Street from Dillard Street to Park Avenue, plus parts of the side streets, was pedestrian-only from 2 p.m. Friday until about 11 p.m. Saturday. Dillard Street from Highway 50 to Plant Street also closed on and off on parade morning. The city pointed drivers to its public lots and to offsite parking, with shuttles for some events. The Observer reported the same 2025 closures. Those were 2025's rules. The 2026 closures and parking plan will be posted on the city's Special Events page, so check there before you leave the house.
The light show from opening weekend keeps running on weekends through late December, almost always at City Hall. The city's event page describes an animated projection set to festive music. The December calendar lists these nights, all 6 to 9 p.m.:
| Weekend | Light show nights |
|---|---|
| Opening weekend | Sat., Dec. 5 and Sun., Dec. 6 |
| Second weekend | Fri., Dec. 11, Sat., Dec. 12 and Sun., Dec. 13 |
| Third weekend | Fri., Dec. 18, Sat., Dec. 19 and Sun., Dec. 20 |
| After Christmas | Sat., Dec. 26 and Sun., Dec. 27 |
That's ten dates. The city's description says the show runs 11 nights, so one date may still be added. The December 19 entry is the exception to the City Hall listings, naming the Winter Garden Masonic Lodge as the location. Check the event page before planning around those two points. Neither the page nor the calendar gives start times for individual shows within the 6 to 9 p.m. window.
The later weekends add their own programs. Holiday Fridays on the Plaza has the Dickens Carolers on December 11 and the Mistletones on December 18, both from 7 to 9 p.m., on the same evenings as the light show. On Saturday mornings, the Winter Garden Farmers Market has "Jolly Fellow" visits on December 12 and December 19, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Downtown Interactive Fountain & Pavilion. If the little ones want Santa without the opening-weekend crowd, those two Saturdays repeat the visit.
One holiday display lasts longer than anything on the calendar. The Downtown Winter Garden holiday page lists the Main Street Holiday Stroll as a pedestrian-only holiday streetscape for 2026. The city's 2026 event page carries the dates, and last year's setup gives a sense of the scale. In 2025 the stroll filled South Main Street between West Plant Street and West Joiner Street. It was open every day from December 5 through January 4, and that block was closed to cars from December 1 to January 7 for setup and teardown.
If the 2026 stroll follows that pattern, it will stay open on the Tuesday and Wednesday nights the city calendar leaves empty, and into the week after Christmas. The Downtown Winter Garden page also lists the lit canopy over the West Orange Trail and the decorated City Hall among the season's displays. If you walk or bike in on the trail from the nearby Horizon West parks, you can see the lights without driving downtown at all.
Garden Theatre on Plant, at 160 W. Plant Street, has the most holiday shows on weeknights. This is the first season for DNA Productions, the city's new presenting partner at the theatre. The holiday shows break down into three groups:
The 10 a.m. Holiday Flix showings on December 22 and 29 fall during winter break, and both morning films are family titles. The radio play gives the theatre's version of It's a Wonderful Life a live run the week before the $5 film screening on December 15.
Several smaller events come before Light Up. On Saturday, November 14, the city's annual Craft Affair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jessie Brock Community Center. It's free, and the handmade goods come from local makers age 50 and older.
The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation hosts Oranges & Ornaments: A Festival of Trees at Heller Hall on Friday, November 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The next day, Saturday, November 21, Brunch Among the Trees: An Oranges & Ornaments Culinary Experience runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the same hall.
Saturday, November 28, combines two events. Downtown Winter Garden's calendar lists a Small Business Saturday celebration from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a sidewalk sale, live music and holiday photo spots. The Holiday Spectacular starts at Garden Theatre that same evening at 7. If you're already downtown for shopping and dinner, you can see the show without making a second trip. For dinner and dessert ideas, Downtown Winter Garden keeps a list of downtown restaurants, and our guide to downtown's markets, dining and the trail covers the year-round favorites.
The Hallmark photo station will stand at Centennial Plaza this holiday season. Because it stays up for the season, you don't have to visit it on the busiest weekend. It fits just as easily into a night at the light show or the stroll.
